Mommy Me Time

Do you need one of these??

I hate it when I am having a bad day and I ask a fellow mommy how they manage having kids, career and everything else and they answer with a confident.. I just do! Where do these women come from? I am far from the mother who tries to act like everything is peachy king”… No   I will be the first one to admit that some days I get stressed out.

Just this weekend I thought it would be a great idea for our entire family to go out to eat. Now I am not the mother who decides to bring all of her kids to a five-star restaurant, no I decided for something safe..Chilis. This is a restaurant that is  laid back and every time I go in there; there are multiple couples with children. So our entire family (2 adults, 2 children under the age of 3 and our 10-year-old son) hopped into our new family truck (see my story, “Attack of the Mini Vans ).The children were good at first until my 15 month old decided to start randomly grabbing things off the table and throwing it on the floor. Then my 2-year-old started to yell (rather loudly) for people to “stop talking”, meanwhile my ten-year old and hubby held their head in shame. Needless to say we ended dinner early and went home to avoid World War III in the middle of Chilis.

Needles to say after that instance I was stressed OUT, on edge, ready to run away so I decided I needed some Mommy Me Time.  What is that you may ask. This time (commonly referred to as M.M.T.) is a time without any children, spouse or anyone else from your household, you can go to the movies, out to eat, to the mall wherever you can relax and not think about home. Where did I go? I decided to go out with some blogger friends (Mimi and Caramel) for a night of drinks (hey I am over 21), laughter and time to decompress everything dealing with MOMMY!  Before I went I grappled with if I needed to go.. After several indecisive moments, I finally got dressed and left all of the crying children at home with their father.

While I was only out for 2 hours, it was so refreshing to talk to adults and just laugh and giggle. WHen I got home, I felt refreshed… no longer stressed out that my 2-year-old has decided to tell any stranger to shut up or that my ten-year old now has a “girlfriend”. All of my worries (at that moment) were gone.  So calling ALL parents take some Mommy Me Time but follow these guidelines:

1. Do it often. I recommend at least once every week. It could be an hour, or last for an entire day–it does not matter everyone needs time to decompress.

2. You do not have to spend a lot of money. Sometimes (especially when budgets are tight) it could mean going to the mall and people watching or going over a friend’s house.

3. While gone away on Mommy Me Time, do not call home to check on things.. Relax you left them with the babysitter/dad/friend because you trust them. If you HAVE to check on your kids…send a text it’s less stressful.

So, have you taken any mommy me time lately? Where did you go? What did you do??

  1. Soooo true! If you unplug you can avoid those “snapped” moments we all read about or see on the news and wonder how on earth a mother could ever get there. I have definitely considered auctioning my children off on ebay this week so I believe I’ll follow your advice today!

I can totally relate to the restaurant fiascoes. But then I get amnesia and do it all again, only to remember WHY I avoided it for so long. I do need more “me” time. I think a trip to the mall will do the trick. Only thing is, I get guilty and feel like I have to rush back home within a certain time frame. I gotta work on the guilt. It’s soooo unnecessary.

  3. I do the same thing…Sometimes I want to get out so bad I think, “the mall won’t be so bad”..then we go and people are looking at us crazy because my 2 year old is yelling at random people…SMH. I used to feel guilty until I saw how easy it is for my husband to go now I throw the deuces **cue Chris Brown song**…lol
